How to correctly return in ping pong?

Question

If you are returning in ping pong, are you allowed to hit the ball BEFORE it bounces on your side, or do you have to wait for it to bounce on your side of the net?

In table tennis you must wait until the opponents ball hits your table; you can only hit after that. If the opponents ball does not hit your table he looses the point. if you hit the ball above the table without it first touching your side of the table you loose the point even if it would have gone wild.
