Question:

How to cover the exhaust fan outlet outside?

My kitchen (range hood) exhaust fan is connected to an outlet on the wall outside the house. The outlet is pretty big (7 inch x 7 inch) and open all the time. How can I cover the outlet to preserve the cool (or warm) air inside the house when the exhaust fan is idle, while still allow it to open when the fan is working? Is there any thing I can install such that the outlet is opened only when the fan is working?

  1. Measure the size or diameter of the opening and take it to Vent/hood /kitchen outlet store and tell them u need a vent shield, that opens up when u have fan on and shuts when u turn fan off.

  2. you can buy a moveable louvre thingy

  3. What you want is standard hardware.

There is an exterior fitting with a gravity damper,

(hinged plate), that opens under the pressure of

fan driven air, but otherwise remains closed.

Check out the local 'Home Despot".

  4. There should be a damper in it that closes off when it isn't being used.  If there isn't one, they aren't very expensive at the local hardware store.

  5. Try a dryer exhaust------ pull off the section of tubing-----

reduce the outputs' opening to fit the dryer exhaust with wood or flashing.

or try a small filter behind a louvered vent plate.
