  1. Web designers are expensive so with the small nonprofit organization that I recently started, I created one with a template.  I don't know much about computers and after much searching, I found the easiest one to figure out at http://www.networksolutions.com  For a 5-page site it's fairly inexpensive and can be easily changed any time you want instantly.

I figure for now it's a good alternative and once we are more financially viable, we can look at a hiring a designer.

  2. I have a charity and I did my own using Microsoft Publisher.  It was pretty easy to do and very easy to update.  There is also a very easy tool under file to publish it your webhosting company.  I use godaddy.com for my registered name and hosting.  Very inexpensive and works great.  Their help desk is wonderful in helping you get everything published.  my site is www.sleeptightfoundation.org  Good Luck.

  3. It's a good idea, because you want a web site that looks attractive and is a reflection of the quality of your organization. But many web designers are willing to donate their service. Consider posting a request for a volunteer web designer to http://www.volunteermatch.org and http://www.idealist.org

You should treat this just as if you were hiring for a paid position -- interview the candidates, ask for samples of work, and then choose the person who feel would both do an excellent web site and would listen to your needs. Make sure you ask for someone who understands accessibility issues -- you want a web site that can be accessed by anyone, including people using assistive technologies, not a web site that's accessible by only people using the very latest software and fastest Internet connection.

For hosting the web site, I recommend Hostgator:

    http://www.hostgator.com/

They provide hosting for just $5 a month. The customer service is excellent.

  4. Absolutely not. If you could post this question you can make at least a simple site.  Best place I know for free ones is www.tripod.com  both because the nonprofit name comes before not after the domain name for ex http://lampga.tripod.com and because they have great easy to use and equally important easy to edit templates.    I have done 5 there for small nonprofits that I or folks I know volunteer with.   You might want to look at a couple http://caringhandsmin.tripod.com and http://withoutrights.tripod.com/

If you prefer to get your own domain name so your site is www.yournonprofitsname.org    for ex http://www.caringhandsministries.comthe best place is http://www.christianwebhost.com  their express package is $4.95 a month and includes your domain name. Other packages start from $8.95 mo and also onclude domain name.  They are good folks to work with and they also have page creator tools to make building a site possible with out a lot of technical know how. In aqddition they have a thing called I webstreamer that gives you great sound on your site at no extra charge.   There is a demo of their site builder so you can try it before you decide if you want to take this on.

  5. I have heard of some websites that are free for non-profits to set-up
