illegals stole my car stereo at my apartment complex. I had a nice

panasonic in-dash stereo, and 4 high quality speakers. (actually it's a van, not a car). The speakers are still in the van.. So I want to reassemble my stereo system and improve it. Another in-dash is a

obvious. But can I buy a sub woofer to complement my speakers? Or are sub woofers only sold as part of a speaker set? Are sub woofers expensive? Is there anything I need to know about powering a sub woofer? Thanks.

  1. You can add a sub to enhance your sound system.  Just keep in mind, sub are just for bass, and bass doesn't necessarily mean good sound.  Subs will range from extremely cheap to extremely expensive.  My suggestion is for you to find a stereo shop that has a good reputation and spend a little time talking to them.  I'm not saying to buy from them or let them do the work, just let them educate you a little.  There are several things to consider when shopping for a sub.  The type of music you listen to most of the time will help determine what size subs, how many, and what type of box you'll need.  The next thing is that you want to buy a sub and amp that will perform well together.  Don't assume that higher ratings on an amp means it's a good amp.  Higher wattage ratings on inexpensive amps are meaningliess (You will not get 1200 watts from a $200 amp).  Check the RMS ratings on the amp and the subs they need to be close.  It's better to slightly over power a sub than to underpower it.  Quality equipment will cost more, but will be worth it.
