  1. On the folder to be shared (desktop?), right click the folder, and select Sharing and Security. In the windows that opens, give the folder a name (or accept the default folder name) and specify who has access. This can be tricky if the user name on each machine is different, so the simplest thing is to allow "Everyone" full access, unless you really need to exclude someone from having access to the folder. On the laptop, browsing the network, and the machine in particular, you'll see the shared folder.

  2. Ok I have the same exact set up you have so read carefully this is not as hard as it may seem. You say you're on the same network and thats a good thing. This is WHAT I would do, go to the folder on the XP machine that you want to transfer over to the Vista machine. Right click it, then click sharing and security. Click the share button and accept the default share name or make one just like stated below. Now after that is done go to your Vista machine and go to start, run and type \\"IP address of XP machine", if you dont know the IP of your XP just go to start, run, type "cmd" enter. then type ipconfig in the command prompt. look for the ip address of your computer. it should look something like this "192.168.0.x" not necessarily those same numbers but it might be. so when you type it into the vista machine it should look like \\192.168.0.x  if you have no firewall settings preventing your computers from talking you should see a screen which displays your printers from your XP machine and geuss what, the folder you just shared as well. from there you can do whatever you want. NOW rememeber if you have antivirus software like norton or mcafee you may have to configure your firewall to allow the computers to see each other on the network.

  3. Right-click on the folder (in the desktop).  Choose "Sharing and Security".  Check "share the folder on the network".  It may take up to an hour for the folder to show on the laptop (double-click the "Network" icon).  Then you can copy (the normal way) files from that folder to somewhere (anywhere you have create rights) on the laptop.

BTW, you can transfer files, you can't "transfer" programs.  Most programs need to be installed, because they make changes to the computer (they won't run without those changes) when they get installed.
