How to create a website when you have your own server?

Question

I know how to do web design and am making a site for a non-profit. they have their own server and want me to create the site. how do i do that? I have access to the server through ftp...and they have already made a folder they want me to use...but how do I create a site?

HELP PLEASE!!

There are 2 ways

1.(not the fastest)Use HTML code. That's how i do it. All servers support it. I have a book that is a very big help. Visual quickstart guide HTML, XHTML, AND CSS

2. (The fastest way.)Most servers w/ paid subscription have templates. No code needed.

If you are using Microsoft Front Page, there is an option that says "Publish to Web".  It will ask you the FQDN of the server, once you go through that the website will be visible from outside.

Just upload your .html (or .php or .asp, whatever you use) files to the folder they want. Make sure the home page is named index.html (or change .html to whatever extension you use)

I would venture to say though, and this is just a hunch, that if you don't know how to upload pages you may not be the best qualified web coder out there...

Use a program like Dreamweaver or Flash to create the website, then simply drag and drop the html and swf files that you have created into the folder they made for you.  

Or is your question about how to get to the folder?

You need to clarify your question, DO you actually know how to make a web page?  Are you asking us how to make a page or how to transfer it to their site?  To transfer through FTP, there are several methods, but I would want to make sure that you can actually produce something before going over it.

Since you already know how to code and design the page, simply use an ftp client, and upload the files to the company's server, using the address and login details they gave you.

you need to buy a domain. Honestly you should get a goddady domain or any otehr company. they offer the server and you can get it very cheap like fo 10bucks
