How to create the "image cloning" effect in videos?

I am going to shoot a video and I want to have many personas of the central character in the same room, as if he had many twins but I have no idea how to shoot this special effect. A friend of mine told me you shoot one same place with the person in different positions but I honestly have no idea how this exactlyw orks. Can anyone pls help me?

Yes, leave the camera in one spot and record your self in different places. I would use Adobe After Effects or Sony vegas if you have it.
