  1. I often use a crocheted border on my sweaters and other handknits, but I always add that last thing -- even after sewing it together -- as part of the finishing.

If you mean you want to know how to cast on from a crocheted chain, which I have heard is possible, you may want to use Google to find instructions for that.

There are other, more common methods of casting on.  You can find great tutorials on these at www.lionbrand.com and www.coatsandclark.com and probably at the website of any other yarn manufacturer you can find.  Check it out; they may even have instructions for casting on from a crocheted chain.

  2. It depends on what you're going to do with the crochet cast on.

If it is intended to be the base row of your project, work single crochets around the barrel of  your needle, one for each stitch to be cast on, then continue to knit as usual.

If it is intended to be a provisional cast on (one that will later be removed so that you can free up the bottom stitches to work in the other direction or add an edging later on, then it's slightly different.  Cast on as before, making single crochets on the needle, but use a smooth (cotton yarn is best for this one) waste yarn (an odd scrap from another project, even string will work), but make 5 or 6 extra stitches than what you will need for your project.  Cut your waste yarn, leaving a longish tail and make one slip stitch and pull the tail through, but loosely.  Make a couple of knots in the tail so you know which end to remove from later.  Now knit the correct number of stitches with your working yarn, using the crochet stitches on the needle to knit through.  When you need to, clip the knots off the waste tail and undo the slip stitch. You can now free one stitch at a time to put on another needle to work your other instructions for the other end or the edging.
