Hi,

I want to ask a question about recycling. I have a broken umbrella and I want to throw it away. What can I do ? Is there any agents that I can get it for recycling or I can give it to Oxfam?

Cheers

  1. Not much you can do with it really!

Depends on how it is broken.  I guess you could take the material off and recycle that then maybe the metal wires.

If not I think it will have to go in the bin if it can't be repaired.

  2. Are you for real? bin it and be done with it... if you put some bricks in your toilet cistern, recycle your paper, plastic and glass bottles and plug out your TV or get rid of it altogether... you'll be doing a fantastic job.

  3. Good suggestion Pete! agree

Remove the fabric (which is water proof and probably reuseable somewhere)  and let the metal be recycled.

  4. I agree, the bin !!!, Could this question be considered "BROLLY FOLLY "

  5. Depends how broken, broken is. If it still opens and works then any charity show will take it off your hands. If it has really had it, then if you are serious about recycling pull off the nylon cover and the plastic handle to leave the bare metal and take it your you local recycling centre.

  6. mmm here no broken umbrella gets binned. They are a wonderful resource of tempered steel and other fun bits.

The round steel wire like bits get cut to length, the ends at one end slightly sharpened and rounded off, a wad of 20 or so put together into a narrow copper, aluminium or even steal as per umbrella stem, tube. The tube is then hammered flat to lock the wires in place. The wires are spread out in a fan shape and hey presto a new durable afro hair comb. (very desirable item if you have afro hair).

Alternatively the wires are sharpened to a fine point and 10 or so tied to the end of a straight cane. A large cane makes a fishing spear, a smaller one a fishing arrow, both very effective at catching lunch or dinner.

The handle and shaft have more peculiar uses sometimes as the basis of children's toy guns.

The small u tubes I have also seen used in fishing spears.

The nylon cover makes a great kids parachute (toy) or a rather nifty carry bag.

So when you say bin it, I say are you crazy?

  7. only one place for that son...... the BIN

  8. If its broken, why on earth would Oxfam want it. Throw it away, or if that bothers you, store it in your fridge. I cant believe I am wasting my time answering this. With all the problems in the world, you are worrying us over your bloody broken umbrella!!!
