  1. What you and she need to do is address the problem(s) leading to detention. And what she's doing may just be a symptom of something else.

For instance, if she's talking back to her teacher, the question is: Why? Sure, some teachers are more difficult than others. But, even in that class, most of the kids probably aren't sent to detention. Your friend is. What's the reason? And again, look beyond just the reason. (For instance, talking back.) Why is she doing that?

Suggest that your friend talk to a guidance counselor. The counselor should be able to point your friend in the right direction--maybe a school psychologist.

Also, suggest that your friend explore the possibility that she has a learning problem or disorder. Maybe there's something happening in class that's just creating a lot of problems for her. Again, the guidance counselor can suggest certain tests that may uncover learning problems. (Frankly, schools aren't very good at such things. Private providers and testers are much better. But you can at least start at school.)

And: How did you end up with detention the day after you go back to school? I'm assuming that the detention was imposed before school actually started? How'd that happen?

Obviously, too, your friend should talk to her parents.

But the key is to get to the root of the problem, rather than just making her feel better after she gets sent to detention.

    Hope that helps.
