How to deal with racism?

Recently, I received a lot of racist comments from a few people that work at my unit. It is supposed to be a joke but I find it racist. Has anyone had that happen to them? How do I deal with racist jokes and comments without starting a fight?

be true to them so they won't end up looking down upon you. tell them honestly that it's not funny, seriously. they should get the picture. and don't react (like laugh) when they make such jokes; instead you can give them a straight face or NOT mind them at all. if you react like it's okay, they won't stop. so show them what you really feel. if they care, they'd stop.

The worst kind of Racism is found in INDIA. Yes India .Whole villages are targeted by Hindus the only difference is here it is called Caste ism .And it is getting worse . At the receiving end are the so called Dalits or untouchables ,and now The Christians for accepting them into their fold.It is not something to be encouraged but believe me it is going on in many more places in the world .You only have to look different and that is enough excuse.

just check the source of were its coming from ... stand back take a look at these losers and know u are a higher class of human being ... don't lower your self to their level .... when they see your not phased it stops ........

Report them...wait actually hole up dont try and stoop to their lvl....write a diary of the time, day and were the abuse is happenining also write as much detail about what they have said to you....ignore them while your gathering your evidence...and then once you've gtn nuff evidence then report them dumb ignorants arses to the boss or whoever will deal with that type of thing....hope this kinda helpz =]

It shouldn't start a fight. You will not be a part of their little reindeer games anymore once you put them in check. Jut tell them that you do not participate in that kind of garbage.

We do not want our kids to give in to peer pressure, but we must stop racism and discrimination each and everytime it pops up.

Report it to management. Racism violates code of ethics and should be grounds for repercussions even termination of employment. Unless you work in worthless very low paging job, which means you should find yourself a better place to work. You shouldn't have to work in a hostile environment, especially regarding racism.

I agree. I don't see the point of racism anyway. It doesn't make anyone feel better, even the one being racist. Well, you could also tell your  boss but then they might mess with you some more. If they really won't stop, then you need to use a little force because without intimidating or using force on them, they will do that to you first.

You should just tell uthem its upsetting you. If it is only meant as a joke then it should be easy too stop. My mixed race son had the same problem but after talking to the people that were bothering him its resolved. Most of the time it is not intended to nmake me you feel bad its just that some people dont know how to deal with things like colour, weight, height ect so make a joke of it to ease theirselves but it doesn't mean you have to put up with it. If talking to them does not work go further talk it over with your boss most work forces will not accept any form of racism or bullying in their workplace.

I just give serious looks, tells the "funny guy" that it is not funny and he/she usually stops, that's my way to get rid of those things

You could pull the person that is making the comments a side and let them no how you feel without being rude or getting angry. you could just tell them "i know that you only mean it as a joke but to me it is a sensitive subject. while i am around do you think that you could keep the jokes to a minimum." by saying it that way you are still getting  your point across but your not causing any tension at work. hope this helps!

i dealt with racism all my life. i find it's only because they don't know any different and you just have to pity them for announcing their stupidity.

when the time is right, tell them to back off on the jokes because it makes them look like kids.

Racism is a horrible thing, and people who think that they are more superior to anyone are insecure and disgusting people.

It can be difficult to handle racism, but I agree with the first answer - tell them to shut up and get back to work.

If they continue to do it, you should talk to your boss about it because those sorts of things are illegal - well they are over here anyway. It's workplace conditions and that kind of behaviour is considered as harassment.

Just have confidence and be proud to be who you are!

just ignore them.  Or join with them and if you do this they will get bored preety fast and you will have fun also.  I am not telling you to be racist or anything just to stop them.

i would just casually laugh at the joke and be like ok guys i get it but those jokes really arent humerous to me and i'd appreciate if yall would cut it out. and hopefully they respect you and will stop. but just know its a joke, and they arent being serious.

There is an old saying "There is no such thing as mean words just sensitive ears"  If the people at your job are making a joke and you are getting offended its because you are ashamed yourself. If your proud of your race wether its white, blak, green, yellow or brown then the words of others should not hurt you. There is no need to fihgt my friend.. just be happy
