Question:

How to deal with water in gas tank?

I apparently have a faulty gas tank. Last time we got a lot of rain here, my motor would not start. I emptied the tank, refilled it and it ran fine. Now I have the same problem. Since it costs about $50 to fill my tank, I would rather treat the gas than pour it out. Has anyone used Heet or anything similar?

  1. a bottle of mentholated spirit 600ml will fix the problem water will mix with the petrol is no bull its a old trick

  2. If the motor will run, then take it out and drain the water separator regularly.

  3. You may have a faulty gas cap letting water in, but most likely you are getting condensation built up from letting the tank sit partially full.

Alcohol binds with water and gasoline. It binds the two together so they will burn in your engine. Read the label and you will find most fuel dryers are actually some form of alcohol.

Alcohol based water removing additives can harm the o-rings and other rubber based parts in your fuel system, resulting in an expensive overhaul.  That is why most boat engines say not to use Methanol.

The best thing to do is drain the gas from the boat, pour it into your pick up where it will mix with the Methanol in the pick up tank.   Start with fresh gas in your boat.

  4. Alcohol has an affinity for water and Heet is basically alcohol.  You probably would be better off finding how the water gets into the tank and stopping that entrance.  If you buy gasahol, you won't have to buy the Heet.

  5. Sure you can save the gas- it floats on the water if you let it settle. Decant the fuel into a clear container (1 gallon plastic water jugs work well), let it settle, and pour the fuel off the top into a next container. Repeat as necessary. It generally just takes a few minutes to settle. I use a transparent in line fuel filter (the take apart kind) to see when my fuel is contaminated and to stay ahead of accumulating water in my tank. It seems they ALL leak! If you leave the vent open the rain gets in, and if you close the vent the tank air expands and blows the seals so it leaks anyway! So I leave the vent open and stay aware of my filter. Hope this helps...

  6. Water treatment only works on small amounts> Fine the water intrusion source> Cap o ring> gasket on the sending unit> You need to get the water out of the tank> Install a water separator with a drain> To collect the water> Add your additive but the water will still stop the engine as all it take is 1 drop to plug the jet>

  7. it works any fuel treatment is fine just read the bottles most does remove water..... and check your cap or add a cover
