Question:

How to deal with working for a family company?

I work with three family members. One of them constantly does this heavy sigh until I ask what is going on. Then I listen to a very detailed, drawn out story about how busy she is, etc. This happens on a daily basis. She is a drama queen who wants attention. Husband/wife bicker back and forth alot. Sometimes I feel put in the middle. Leaving company not an option.

  1. Do your job, be more effiecient and try to ignore the "heavy sighs". She is doing that to draw your attention and your making her suceed everytime.

Just pretend that you are/were busy in your job and did not here notice. If she categorically goes to the extent of checking on you directly, then try postponing the discussion by giving some excuse, till you can. When you can't postpone the act any further, take a meal break, snack or drink or smoke break (if you smoke) and do multitasking. Give her the ear that she want but don't empathize or sympatize, don't be attentive, don't ask questions and get back to work at the first opportunity.

Learn the skills of the job and build you knowledge and core competencies. Wait for the time when you have the option to take change.
