Question:

How to decorate above cupboards?

by  |  earlier

My new apartment has vaulted ceilings in the living room, dining room, and kitchen. I really want to do something with the space above my cupboards, but I'm not sure what.

My ideas are very tall vases or candles? My fiance doesn't want to decorate with fake ivy or leaves.

Any new or fun ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. Mabey you could put fake flours up there or paintings or something nice mabey. =]

  2. You can put string lights up there. Or you can buy those vases filled with different colored vegetables and vinegar and put those up there too.

  3. I would decorate w/ items that don't have to be dusted!!!!

Vases and candles are nice but could end up being a lot of work once up there. Dust will collect...vases won't shine as they should and candles are only nice if you plan on burning them... careful w/ them too close to the wall or ceiling most leave black soot (even if they say they don't).

Personally, I would use those decorative medal wall hangings to draw the eye upward to show off those high ceilings.

You can get all sizes, colors, w/ or w/o mirrors (might be nice). There is no real commitment decorating with those things and they are cheap. Try places like Ross, Kohls, Target even Walmart has them now cheap.

  4. You could always put up some pictures or do a paint job.

  5. I wouldn't do candles personally. You could do vases of various sizes or decorative platters in plate holders. I actually like a mixture of the plants, vases etc. Take a look at this link about 3/4ths of the page down is what I was thinking for my kitchen. Depends on what the theme of your kitchen is to begin with.

  6. Pottery and basketry is the new vogue idea for shelf above cupboards.

Go with an Italian motif or a Mexican motif ~ or even Chinese

Pier 1 has great stuff cheap.

Tip some of the baskets and pottery on its side to create different levels.  You may want to use some artificial flowers or greenery too.

  7. I'm in the process of removing wallpaper in my kitchen, and I have a big empty space above the kitchen cabinets.  Instead of setting dust collectors on top of the cabinets, I plan on framing art or photos on the walls to add visual interest.  Something you might try.

  8. why the **** are you worrying about cubords you leave em as they are if you decorate them they look tacky

  9. Maybe some type of lighting would be marvelous!

  10. Please don't do anything.  Keep it clean and open otherwise it winds up looking too cluttered.  I have had open space above my cabinets in my kitchens in all the homes I have built and I would never use that space to put anything.  And if you go through models of homes with the same space you won't see anything on top of those cabinets.  Even decorators won't touch that space.  Keep it clean and clutter free.
