  1. Only a fool brings a knife to a gun fight.  Haven't you seen the first Indiana Jones movie?  You know. The big guy with the sword.  Indy pulls out his revolver, and plugs the dude.  That's how to do it without  getting cut.

    If you can, run away

    If you can't run away, try to find a weapon if you have the opportunity, (umbrella, pool cue, chair, coat, rolled up magazine, tyre iron), then stay out of range.

    If you don't have a weapon and can't run away there are two common ways someone will attack, either a slash down and across from your left to right(assuming attacker is right handed) or a stab towards the body.

    As the stab comes pat the attackers arm away with your left hand and step to your left, from here you should be looking for the opportunity to run, you may also have the option to push the attacker off balance or kick the knee to aid your escape (depends on experience and situation)

    With the slash the left hand comes up to lift the attackers right arm up and over the head, stepping diagonally up and to the left as you do this. As you pass the attackers arm over your head bring your right arm up in front of your left and on the outside of your attackers arm to take over control of the attacker. Again you should now be looking to escape the situation.

    DO NOT grab the wrist. If during training you wish to try to control the opponent and disarm the knife holding the wrist still allows too much freedom of movement of the knife hand. You must hold the fleshy part of the palm below the thumb to have control of the hand.

    The overhead X Block may stop the first attack but the knifeman/woman will most likely pull the knife back towards his body and you risk getting both wrists cut as he/she does this.

  5. kick. if he stabs your legs you'll just be in pain. if you try punch him and he stabs your face you're screwed.

    keep you eye firmly on the weapon, so you can block it if it comes.

    If he attacks from above, make an x with your forearms, so his arm will become wedged between them. if he stabs straight at you, swing your arm so that you push his arm to one side.. and move your body the other way.

    practice these, cos you dont have time to remember this when in a situation

    but your best be is to get away at least to find a weapon of your own. there's always a brick around somewhere

  15. The answers just keep getting dumber and dumber. With the exception of one or two, you can disregard the others unless you want to winde up dead.

    First off do not kick. Why would you voluntarily put something out there to get cut or stabbed, if you don't have to? Do you know how small atarget the wrist is and how fast it moves out of the way? Ever hear of the Femoral Artery?

    First option is to run, and get away in any way shape or form you can.

    If it is impossible to run, realize that you will get cut, all you can do is try and minimaze the damage from it. The best place to take cuts is on the outer forearms, as anything vital tends to be buried pretty deep.

    Second you must take control of the weapon IE wrist holding the weapon and nutrelize it as soon as possible. how you would do this is all dependent on the situation. Yes you will get cut doing this.

    The good thing is unless they are trained, most people will struggle for the knife, rather then strike with another part of their body. The knife is their power. main priorities are to gain control of the weapon first, then disarm as soon as possible. This might be as simple as a punch to the jaw, knocking him out. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PUNCH OR KICK THE KNIFE OUT OF HIS HAND. THIS IS GREAT IN THE MOVIES BUT WILL GET YOU HURT IN REAL LIFE.

    Again you will get cut, all you can do is minimize the damage. As to what else to do, it really depends on the situation. Best bet though is to run.

    People die more often from knife wounds than gunshot wounds of those that do survive knife wounds do the most long lasting crippling effects sometimes for a life time.

    If I shoot you in the arm or leg the bullet will pass thru or become lodged in bone or muscle .If a major artery isn't severed your chances of survival are great.If I stabbed or slash you in the arm or leg my chances of cutting major artrerys increases as a knife is a directed weapon a bullet is haphazard once it leaves the barrel.Also the knife has a greater potential because of the larger entry wound to sever nerves which means you will never use that arm or leg again properly.Sever a major artery and you bleed out in 3 to 5 minutes unconciousness occurs in 15 to 20 seconds.

    More cops have had to retire or take desk jobs due to knife wounds than gun shot.Even head shots are not a guranteed kill with a gun .

    Before wandering off into to self defense technical fantasy land about how you are going to handle a knifer a situation that will push your heart rate from 60 bpm to 280 bpm in 3 seconds study the subject the situation and it's effect on your metabolism using proven science and studys based on people who have "been there done that" not once but many times.

    That jump in bpm also happens to him but in his favor as it deadens pain it will do nothing for you if you get stabbed might not hurt as much or you may not even realize you have been stabbed but you will suffer the effects.Your super self defense moves he may not feel until the next day.
