  1. I go by how many traffic lights are in the area.

The more traffic lights, the more urban.

    The few, then more rural.

Then there are the suburbs and small towns which are in between.

That you can measure by how many SUV's you see  :)

  2. I always use sidewalks and street lamps, but that probably won't work in countries that don't have them in either place.

Rural can mean farmers, or the small towns that serve farmers, or both. In my part of California a "Rural" settlement has less than 5,000 people and most of the surrounding land is devoted to crops.

The US Census bureau probably has an exact definition, based on population density, of urban, suburban and rural.

  3. Urban and Rural is defined by location and population and culture... because a urban society is found in  a city environment,  it often gets a stigma for being black and closely associated with hip under-tones  and large population... but it's really about the location..... rural areas are  suppose to be wooded or dense foliage environment.. separating the person from their neighbors and privacy... stigma for having farming or the hidden rich because of the ownership of land.. ... but it's really about location....

so...one is in the city.... and the other is in the woods....

  4. uh rural is like living on a farm far from the city and urban is like living in the city...
