  1. There are some great points here.

If you are happy that the speech is well written, you have all the pronunciations ok and you like the flow of the speech then you are off to a good start.

As said, practice, practice, practice is the best way. Perhaps even practicing in front of people who have an opinion you respect.

Might be worth double checking that your speech gets the audience on side quickly. For example, with graduation speeches identifying yourself with the school and congratulating the graduates will have everyone on side.

There are lots of little ways to make it all go better.

Dressing sharply and feeling good can help the speaker feel a little stronger.

Stand straight and don't hold the podium in a vice like grip.

Speak slowly and very clearly. People want to be able to hear and understand you.

Speak evenly and sincerely. I have heard many speakers increase the pitch of their voice at the end of a sentence and we all wondered if they were asking us a question.

If you are expecting a laugh at some point and it does not materialize, just move on.

To keep eye contact as best you can, type in the top half of the page. Also type in large font for simple reading.

Visit the venue beforehand, just to be comfortable with where you will be. Be sure the podium and any equipment are easy to use and the right height.

I also mark up my speeches with a big red dot for a pause and a big green dot for a change of emphasis.

    Good luck to you!

  2. eye contact, a loud voice and confidence.....without these, you suck

  3. Go over and practise the speech at home before you deliver it. You will then be familiar with the speech, so you can take a quick glance at your palm cards and use more eye contact with the audience.

Talk in a loud and confident voice, and there is no rush, so just relax up there and slow yourself down if you start speeding up.

Make plenty of eye contact with the audience, but not just at one section of the audience, make sure to occasionally glance at each section of the audience.

Don't choose words which you have trouble pronouncing, but do try to make it sound intelligent with more sophisticated language.

Don't focus on anything but the above points and it's really easy.

  4. make sure you always appear to be looking at someone, try to make eye contact with as many people as you can.

Always use words like us and we to make people feel included

you need a strong voice with authority but it can't sound like your arrogant or self centered.

    sound relaxed and confident

  5. 1 - You should make sure that you are well prepared. If you don't know it off by heart, by sure to have cue cards handy in dot point form.

2 - When presenting your speech connect with the audience. Maintain eye contact as much as possible, speak in a clear and confident voice and project to the back of the room. Don't try to speak loudly, per say, but use your diaphragm.

3 - If you're nervous, you could try making a little joke during your speech to lighten the mood, depending on what your speech is about. There's always the imagining the audience in their underwear trick!

4 - Your actual speech should be well structured, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. You need to be sure that the conclusion is concise, and easily legible. You don't want to be awkwardly standing there and have to say, 'I'm finished', and you don't want people to applaud your speech too early, either.

5 - Remember to make it interesting for your audience. You could use visual aids, if you're allowed to - a power point, a poster, music, a video clip etc. Don't make it too long so that it drags on, but make sure you reach the time minimum, also.

6 - Have fun. If you appear comfortable, then the audience will enjoy your speech more, too.
