In the aim of the draft of my river field report, I wrote:

"The purpose of this study was to study the PSO River profile at the specified site locations in Map 1, to see whether it conforms to a classic river profile and its respective characteristics."

My teacher added the comments;

Where is the river?

How big is it?

For where is it do I just say "the PSO river profile within the New Territories, HH Bay"?

And for how "big" is it, how do you describe the size of a river?

  1. Include the source of the river and the mouth (or wherever it ends) for location and size.  Add maximum width if you can access that information.

  2. Do not include the length of the whole river when determingin where it is.  Imagine the issues if you were studying a section of the Mississippi and you included the headwaters and the mouth.

    Where is the River refers to where you took your reading, the specific sites.  You can give an absolute location as well as a general description of the area.

    How big is the river refers to how wide/deep it is in those areas as well.  Was the river 4 feet deep and 10ft across or was the river 14ft across and 6 ft deep?  Think of how useless it would be if you included the headwaters of a 3,000 mile river but sampled it 550 miles downriver, the headwaters (as well as mouth) are pretty useless at that point.

    Those are basically what your teacher is asking.  If you want to include a brief.  The PSO River is X miles long you can, but focus on the areas you did, those are the most pertinent to your report.
