How to destroy a hard drive?

How can i destroy my hard drive without getting anyone too suspicious?

If there is a chance someone would try and attempt some form of data recovery on it then you need to take it apart and physically destroy the tape inside. If you just want it so the data is unreadable then a 5 foot drop on the floor usually works or try and decent size magnet.

Big/Medium size magnet will wipe it out completely without repercussions.  Just wave it over the drive a couple of times.  Make sure to keep any other magnetic media away that you don't want to erase.  Look up "Bulk magnet"

get a hammer and smash the disc in side it... put it back in ... and no one will ever know till they turn it on... or unplug it and smash inside where its supposed to be connected...

How do you want to destroy it? Do you just want to destroy the data? Or do you want to physically destroy it? Anyway, a low level format (zero fill) will destroy the data because you're overwriting it with zeros, hence the term "zero fill". If you want to physically destroy it, thermite will certainly trash it beyond repair. Thermite is a mixture of iron oxide and aluminum powder. It will melt the hard drive into oblivion, literally. As for raising any suspicion.... well.... just don't tell anyone.......

And - by the way, DO NOT try this indoors or by yourself and make sure you're about 50 feet away from it and have the fire department en route to you during this endeavor. Seriously, thermite can not only melt the hard drive but it can also melt YOU into oblivion.

Hi,

The safest way to work it out will be exposing the hdd to powerful magnet or magenetic field, which really makes the data unrecoverable.

Open your computer, unplug the HD, either the power supply or the connector, close your computer, when whomever you're trying to fool wonders why it won't work, act really upset, take it out to have it "repaired", go buy a new one, drop the old one in a garbage can on the way in, come home, tell them there was nothing they could do, and put in the new one.

This depends on whether you have a PC or a mac.

If you are doing this to receive a new computer and it is a pc your best bet is to download a virus. these are all pretty easy to find but you may have to download a few to do some serious damage. A mac may be a little harder you may have to do some physical damage to it and this is hard if you are trying to remain inconspicuous.
