I have a 7.5 horse mercury outboard, tiller type, probably late 70's. Can I determine the year by the Serial Number?

If so, the number is 7105787.

Also, any sites that have free schematics/troubleshooting guides for that motor?

  1. yes the serial number has all the info on the motor, go to a mercury marine shop and tell them you want spakplugs  give them the serial number and ask them to tell you what year the motor is

  2. SR7105..... would be 1978  I misread the chart at maxrules.com.      ...Check Iboat.com for repair manuals.......Good luck!

  3. From the charts in the attached links, it looks like it's a 1985.   The easiest way to verify is to call your nearest Mercury OB dealer.

If you are going to keep this motor for awhile, invest in a repair and service manual, it will pay for itself in the long run.  Here's a link to buy one.  .

  4. Are you sure about that ser#?  I,come up with 1985.  Check the ser# on the block to verify.  It is on a silver colored disc inset into the engine block, on the side.  As far as service manuals, get one from Seloc, through Sierra Marine, about $20.
