There was a question about shooting heavier bullets in a guy's rifle. One answer was to check the twist rate to deterrmine the optimal bullet weight. Besides the rate of twist being stamped on some rifle barrels "How do you gage the twist rate on a rifle?" This is no particular caliber.

  1. The only ways i know of is get a gauge 2. take it to a gun smith # Look the gun up on the iternet.

  2. I don't know if there is a best practice way to do this, but here's one way you might do it.

Put a cleaning rod with a patch or brush all the way into the barrel.  Mark the rod at the end of the barrel to indicate the start of the length and the start of the rotation (i.e. mark 12:00).  Pull the rod out, allowing the rifling to rotate the rod.  When the rotation mark is back at 12:00 mark the cleaning rod for the end of the length.  Measure the length you know that you have 1 twist in x number of inches.

  3. The easiest way is to see if it's listed in the owner's manual.  If not, a quick call to the manufacturer will give you your answer.

  4. To measure twist use a wooden dowl rod just under bore size and wrap enough cloth around one end to make it tight in the bore.  mark a starting point and count both around and length

push in until one revolution is made and mark.  Pull out the dowl and measure the distance
