There is no way one can determine the cost of a gemstone as they have no price standards like Gold and silver.

In India, you can buy a ruby at starting price of Rs.500 per carat for a spinel variety, somewhat opaque, 6 carat ruby.

The price increases per carat with the improvement in quality which include clarity, colour, cut and carat (weight).

The best rubies come from Burma and are in price ranges of Rs.2000 per carat and above.

There is no upper price limit for gemstones. Rubies can get even costlier than diamonds at times.

The best way is to buy from a trusted seller. And, never try to buy gemstones at discounted rates as there are more synthetic and treated gems in market than the natural untreated ones. A natural gemstone which has been mined, polished and cut and has travelled a lot of distance to reach you cannot be cheap.
