  1. I have learned through experience that the best way to become more professional is to become a better listener.    Many times what people are telling you is not really what they mean and only after you have heard them out do you have a better understanding of what they are truly talking about.    DO NOT  JUDGE too quickly.   Listen, digest the information and respond slowly but you must respond.    Also keep information to yourself.   The more people trust you, the more of a professional you are condsidered.    When people share in confidence keep it that way.   The trust you form will carry you a long way.   Professionalism is also in your dress.  Don't assume anything and carry yourself with poise.

Depending upon your position would determine if you can joke around at work at all or not.  That would lhave to be your call.    If you have a work related gathering, keep it somewhat professional.

Home is where you can be you, but once you walk out your door keep in your image in tact.

  2. You don't have to be a professional with your friends and family you can be yourself however in the workplace you must be professional if you want to project the correct image and even outside of the workplace (other than home) be careful how you act since you never know who you may bump into.  Be careful what you say as well...it is not unheard of to be sitting in a restaurant putting down your boss or colleagues and find out he/they are sitting in the booth behind you!
