How to diagnose auto transmission on a 99 vw jetta?

takes off fine no problem but wont shift untill too high of an rpm...over heats now too ..any 1 know whar site to get diagnostics from for free..onr any 1 knows the subject ..most appreciated on any help..

Your shifter cable may be stretched. Easy fix - buy a new one and replace.
