How to dial extentions?

How do you dial an extention on the phone when someone gives you a specific extention to contact them at. For example it's the number and then Ext. 222 or something like that.

Do you press the # key?

Do you just type the extra digits as part of the regular phone number?

  1. just dial regular number

  2. Just dial the regular number they give you first. Ususally you will get a recording saying something like "please enter the extension of the person you are trying to reach..." and then you put in the ext.

  3. If just entering the extension doesn't work, then try pressing the # key after the extension numbers.  Sometimes the # key acts like a "send" key.

If that doesn't work, then one question:

Are you using a VoIP phone?

It is a common problem for some VoIP calls to not process DTMF tones properly.  Sometimes it is a problem with how the VoIP service provider processes DTMF signalling tones.

I have experienced that problem many times with different VoIP services - some will send DTMF tones OK and some will not.  It is often a matter of how the VoIP carrier and network processes DTMF tones..... it's a complex issue as to why this happens.... but, it is usually related to the encoding/decoding Codecs used to process the calls...
