My daughter is 4 years old and recently suffered a degree of brain damage. She is being aggressive towards her younger siblings, but showing limited awareness that what she is doing is wrong. How can my partner and I show to her that her behaviour is wrong? Is there any way we can discipline her so that we can stop or reduce the aggression? Or is it wrong to discipline a child who is showing limited awareness of what she is doing? Please help.

  1. for you to discipline her, she would have to understand what she did was wrong.. you said she has recently suffered a degree of brain damage,  could this be the cause of her agression..?  if she then do you feel she should be punished..?

I think she needs to be dealt with, not punished.

  2. I have a child with Autism who is also nonverbal with vision and stomach problems. When he is acting up, I do talk to him and let him know his behavior is unacceptable. You'll be surprised on what they do understand. I also redirect him to other activities if I see he is becoming aggressive.

It was also helpful for me to work with a Behavior Specialist thru the school system. The Behavior Specialist helped me identify signs that can lead to aggressive behavior and how to prevent it.  It's not wrong to discipline a child with special needs...how else will they learn?

  3. y dont you use hand signs. My sister has Autism and we use had signs to help control her, Because things get to her brain quicker by visual things then saying something verbal. If you want some signs let me know and i will email them to your hubby and you. Here is my email firefighter_ash200@yahoo.com.au. good luck.

  4. If she truly doesn't understand that it is wrong the best thing to do is redirect her. When she is doing something bad stop her and direct her attention to something more acceptable.
