  1. I'm mildly autistic (meaning it's not so bad - it's not severe). When I was 8 (I'm 17 now) my talent was having the reading level of a senior in high school (the grade I'm in now). I've always been smart like that.

  2. Cheekymonkey is right on two points- that it's a stereotype that all autistics have a talent, and that being exposed to a wide range of opportunities will potentially bring out gifts.

There is no way to 'force' out the talent, just wait, and you never know, it might just be there, hiding beneath the surface. =]

  3. Everyone has a talent.  Some more obvious then others.  However, the best thing is to observe the child.  Take notes of the child's interest.  Remember, it can be something as simple as having organizational skills.  Since, autistic children like to line things up, have structure/order in their lives.

  4. follow teh child's lead--allow him to experiment and explore--

give opportunities for reading, music, sports, art, etc....

don't push--just see what the child does with it....

  5. As with any child, the only way to discover interests and talents is to offer access to a wide variety of activities. It is a stereotype that all people with autism have a talent. It is referred to as a splinter skill and appears only in a small population, just like in the general population.

The best thing to do with any child is to encourage diversity.

  6. Floortime by Greenspan.

  7. i'm little autistic (Asperger's) and i have great songwriting skills and a great singer, and a wizz with comptures, but when i was 8 i didn't know i had these talents (now 14), i have just discovered them when i was 13.
