Question:

How to disintegrate bat bones?

I work at a thrift store and we got in a beautiful antique water canteen. The openings are just large enough to stick a knitting needle in and swish it around. There is a dead bat inside. I've tried to break up the bones to dump them out of the hole but that hasn't worked. Does anyone know what common products we can use to possibly disintegrate the bones so it's in sellable condition?

  1. Any mild acid will dissolve the bones.  Vinegar will work but very slowing.  Muriatic acid found in hardware stores (it is really 10% hydrocloric acid) will work faster, especially if you can heat it up a bit.  All acids will work but they will work faster if warmed or hot, and if you can break up the bones a bit to increase thesurfae area they will work even faster

Even coca cola will work but very slowly.  Some with lemon juice.
