There are a few companies that will take them.  If you live in Nor Cal, there's a place in Benicia that will take them.

call your town hall and check with either the public works, or sanitation dept.'s. or if your town has a private contractor doing refuse collection, check with them. good luck.

Most appliance stores have a junk pile out back. You can bring it there.

Our city takes microwaves, computers, etc 4 days a week. I got info by calling city hall.

If it still works or can be repaired, donate it to a charity place like Goodwill. Someone will think they got a bargain. You can also ask your local community college if they need donations like this for their electronic repair students to dissect it or practice working on.

I think every community has a heavy/light appliance disposal day, once or twice a year. You should dispose of it properly as above because the microwave generating tube contains mercury.
