Question:

How to do better in school?

Hi, I'm 13 years old and going into eighth grade.

I do pretty crappy in school, barely managing B's and C's.

The thing is, I've heard that people with high IQ's usually do bad in school, so to test this, I took an IQ test.

My IQ is 123.

Do you think this has anything to do with it?

How can I do better in school?

Most, of the problem is I can't pay attention too well.

Please help!

Thanks.

  1. Nothing wrong with B's, and C's could be better, but they're not failing. The key to school is organization and planning ahead. Get a calendar (or make one) with good sized squares. Put on it what has to be done when, due dates for papers and projects, chapters to read for this week and next. Cross things off when you finish them, or give them a % complete. Highlighters are a reader's best friend.

When you start a project or chapter, skim through it and see what the minor headings are so you can get an idea of what they'll want you to learn. For the following week, don't read it yet, just skim it so you get an idea of how long it it, how easy/hard you think, and the sub-topics. Do your hardest homework first while you're fresh.

For terms, definitions, formulas, etc., use 3X5 file cards to drill yourself. Every time you get one right, put it in the "good" pile. Keep going until they're all in the "good" pile. Never cram- it's short-term memory. If you don't understand something, look it up on the internet and put it in your own words.

No sane 13 year old likes school, but it has to be done It's more fun when you have a system and get ahead of the game.

  2. IQ tests don't mean anything.

Make sure to give a boy a ********, this will help.

  3. All i gotta say kid is people do rough at times what is important is to pick yourself up .. if you have a problem paying attention then you should have a friend that you can always get notes from and review what you learned try getting a tutor and extra help at home

    take care ..

  4. Maybe you should get home schooled, that always makes you smarter and since you are alone it is easy to pay attention.

  5. You may need to evaluate your habits such as eating well, exercising, and resting. The reason I'm saying that is becuase if you are having trouble sleeping you will not be able to stay focused in class. Exercising will allow you to sleep better by releasing stress. It doesn't have to be strenous, you may go jugging for half hour, that's like a mile and you are going to feel so much better! Make sure to always stretch before any exercise routine. Also watch what you eat, avoid junk food and excess sugar, try to follow a healthy diet, eat a good breakfast, lunch and dinner, and make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout your day. Believe it or not when you are dehydrated your brain is also dehydrated, which causes attention and tireness problems. You are definetely very smart, and if these suggestions don't work you may need private tutoring, you need to share this info with your parents. A good tutor will help you catch up and show you strategies to get back on your feet, and tutoring should only last for 2-3 months. Just don't wait too long if the problem continues, ask for help. Good luck!

  6. Well I don't know about the IQ to school grades ratio but I found I used to have the same problem they just moved too slowly through it all, best way to keep yourself entertained and up to date is to help your friends in class, this way you are killing boredom and learning the material at the same time (as you remember 90% of what you teach others).

  7. It all starts in the morning! Make sure to get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast.

When you get to school...make sure you don't have any useless items on your desk that could distract you.

When you get home..get right on your homework. If you wait too long you could forget how to do certain things.

  8. Well, school can be pretty darn boring, so it's understandable that you sometimes have trouble paying attention. I used to practice my drawing while the teacher talked and it relaxed me and I actually took in most of what the teacher said.
