ok i am making a skin on frame kayak. inuit styal. i know inuit styal is kinda fragile and hard to balance, but this is the styal i am chosing. i am obviously not going to put seal or whale skin on myy kayak, but insted, waterproof fabric. my question is, wat is the esiest way to put the fabric on the frame? do you cut it into pieces and then sew them together? i also need a list of good waterproof fabrics that would be suitalbe for a boat. if you go to ''imeges'' on your yahoo home page, and type in ''inuit kayaks'' you will see on the top row of pictures, three picts over a good pic os a inuit kayak. no comments please, only real answeres. 10 points to the clearest, most detaled answer. thanks!

  1. i built a similar kayak some years ago. it was oak framing and i covered it with a lightweight canvas and fiberglassed it over the canvas. there may be better materials available now, but it worked great for me then.

  2. There are books in most reasonable libraries that will have the details for you.

I think that the most common method is to use a few large pieces and stretch them around the corners, then overlap a bit at the joints.

Some people use waterproof (coated) fabric but most are done by painting or varnishing the fabric to make it waterproof.

change your search to skin on frame kayak and you will get better results since that is how they are best known.  You might want to add waterproof, waterproofing, coating, paint, or varnish to the search.
