  1. To capture to the desktop (.png formate):

    scree capture- Apple-Shift-3

    selection capture- Apple-Shift-4

    window capture- Apple-Shift-4-Space

    add a Ctrl if you want to capture to clipboard

    the grab application is more versatile, but this is quicker and easier

    also nifty is Ctrl-Alt-Apple-8 to invert screen colours (looks cool, doesn't particularly achieve much, although it's easier to read in glare)

    and Ctrl-Apple-D will give you a definition of any word your hovering over in an apple native application.

    though i have leopard, if you have tiger i'm not sure which one's of these will work for you


  2. There is an application called "Grab" in the utilities folder.  Once that is open, it is easy to do screen captures, window captures or even specific area captures.  Then you can save this to many different formats.
