Question:

How to do the "Splits"???

If I were to (hypothetically of course...) simply force myself all the way down, in watever way that could be done, how excessive would the pain be and how long would it linger?

Mind you, the immediate pain is less of a factor for me than the pain afterward. I'm studying online courses for Wushu and Muay-Thai before I indulge in actual classes and as you probably know if I were more limber it would make the process alot easier for me.

  1. you would have a LOT of pain. it would linger for AGES. we are talkin weeks or even months here mate. Dont try it. unless your sensai ells you otherwise in which he deems you rady for such a thing and there will be not a whole lot of pain. if you are instructed to do so, do not force yourself. a little at a time, a bit a day will get you there in around 2 weeks.

    Hope i have helped

  2. Hi there

The key to having good flexibility lies in constant repetition and daily routine. I have been doing the box splits for over ten years now and I am in my 30's. To be able to perform the splits you need to have good flexible hamstrings and hip joints plus the associated muscle groups that support them.

I only use 3 exercises that stretch these groups and they are

    1. sitting in the lotus position and pushing my knees to the floor.

    2. bending down and touching my toes, can also be done seated.

3 perform the splits and hold for 30 seconds repeating the exercise 3 or 4 times and hold each stretch longer.

Combine each set of exercises with relaxed breathing as your muscles will stretch more when you don't force them.

If you perform these exercises everyday you should be well on your way. Remember stretching should feel uncomfortable and never painful. Dont rush things. Build it up gradually.

You mentioned about on-line learning. Books, DVDs and the Internet are only supplements to actual training. Without direction from a qualified instructor how do you know what your looking at is correct or what your doing is right. Trust me whats on-line is garbage and i wouldn't touch You-tube with a 10 foot bargepole. Its content really is that bad! Anything that looks flashy generally has no substance.

Good instruction and daily stretching with no gimmicks. That's all there is to it. :-)

    Best wishes
