How to download recorded shows from dish dvr?

Question

need to download some shows from my dvr to free up some space. I know dish will let you download to a hard drive via a fee paid activation. Is that a reasonable way to go or is there a better way?

it works perfect that way ( external storage.)... i run a second vid. output to my tv card on my cp and can replay and save to my HD . then record to dvd if i want....its kinda of labor intensive that way but its free
