Question:

How to dress in Paris?

I'm a 19 year old guy, Canadian, going to Paris for the first time in mid June. Mostly, I just don't want to go around looking like the average "American tourist". What does a guy my age wear to blend in more with the Parisian crowd and not look like a vulnerable and clumsy American tourist?

  1. Hi ! I live in Paris so I think i'm a good person to help you but i don't know very very good english...In Paris there are many perple from different cultures(even if they are all french) so ...

But I think you should wear nautral colors so black or blue or brown, things like that. You can wear a jean cause a jean is always good looking, but i don't know if you know it , le trend is a bit large jeans which begins on the ***(oups i dont know how to say it sorry). Don't worry black or  brown troussers are ok too. It's the summer so you may wear a T-shirt which can be more or less small(but not too small), with a men veste or a large pullover.

The shoes shouldn't be running tennis it's realy out in the city. But they can be white of course.

The bag shouldn't be too big like the ones for camping, when people leave for 2 weeks !

I hope I helped you and I hope that you understood what I mean(I did my best, sorry if it's sot enought)... Am I the best answer ? =)

    Bye and don't worry !!!

  2. You're really worrying about nothing. You will be one of a vast army of tourists from all over the world and will "blend in" with them. Whether or not people identify you as a tourist will have no impact whatever on you.

Besides, no matter what you wear, both your actions and your speech will immediately reveal you as a tourist.

I assume you speak French but I can attest from personal experience that speaking Québécois will be a dead giveaway that you're not a Parisian.

And even if that weren't the case then walking around looking at everything with a map in one hand and a guidebook in the other tends to blow your cover.

But don't worry about it. The claim that the French treat tourists badly is just anti-French nonsense.

Dress for comfort and in proper anticipation of the weather. Temperatures can be quite variable and there is a lot of rain in June. So have at least a lightweight rain slicker or umbrella with you and make sure you have a good pair of proper walkiing shoes (something sturdy, water resistant and with rock solid arch support).

EDIT: Rather than trying to describe what people wear, take a look at this little video of people at a popular club in Paris. You can judge for yourself how to dress. http://www.paris-zoom.com/video/257/Geor...

  3. pants and button up shirt

    pants and polo shirt

    dark socks and dress shoes.

    please no sneakers.

  4. in Europe, if you wear Tennis shoes, you will be recognized as an American instantly.  When i was in the Netherlands, i wore jeans, t-shirts, polos, button ups, and was asked on more than one occasion for directions and told that they thought i was a local.

  5. Aside from Americans wearing berets and f***y packs, I'd say the tourist look isn't as bad as you'd think. I met loads of Parisians that found it kind of cute. I think girls might get away with it better though.

One serious word of advice though - keep your bills seperate from your change, and >not< in your pockets. Maybe a little change pouch in your pocket is fine. And you'll definitely accumulate a lot of coins there. But bills and ID you want to keep stashed. Pick pockets are a plenty...
