I have a large old mirror mounted on a wall. I don't like the mirror, too costly to resilver. I want to mount an art piece on top. How do I drill a hole through the mirror so that I can hang the art work on top of it?

  1. they make specialty drill bits that have a spade shape at the tip of the drill bit that help drill into glass, plexiglass, and mirrors much easier without cracking.  keep the drill speed on a very slow setting and take your time while drilling with this kind of bit.  If this is just a one time thing, try seeing if a friend or neighbor has one handy.  Hope this helps.  Best wishes.

  2. you need a drill bit for glass and you are set, just DO NOT apply too much pressure to the drill bit, let it cut through the mirror on its own speed or you may crack the mirror

  3. Drilling a hole in glass is easy with the correct bit, pressure and patience. You need a diamond coated glass cutting bit. Not a normal wood or steel bit. Low speed and light pressure when drilling. Use mineral oil as a lubricant.

  4. If it's a small hole, put a piece of tape on the spot where you need the hole to stop the bit slipping. Set your drill speed to as low as you can with the hammer action OFF. Use a drill bit made for steel.

  5. If you can't find a glass cutting bit, purchase one that is a masonry bit, they work in a similar way.
