Question:

How to dye trim on dress?

I have a white gown with blue-greenish lace trim on it. Is it possible to lighten the trim? I'd like it to be a light baby blue color so I thought adding some pale blue, almost white layer of [something] over the trim, very carefully, might work but I don't know the first thing about doing this. Any ideas?

  1. You can't use dye to lighten the color of anything, because dye is transparent. The original color always shows through. However, since your dress is white, there's no reason not to try removing dye from the whole dress; the only change will be in the color of the trim.

Don't use chlorine bleach (hypochlorite) to try to remove color. Bleach will damage or destroy synthetic fibers such as nylon, which is most likely what the trim on your dress is made of. Instead, use a sulfur-based color remover, such as Rit Color Remover (which is sodium dithionite) or Jacquard Color Remover (which is thiourea dioxide).

You can buy Rit Color Remover in pharmacies and grocery stores, next to the Rit dye. (Please note that I do not recommend Rit dye, because it is inferior to other dyes, but Rit Color Remover is an excellent product.) You can use the Rit Color Remover in the washing machine in the hottest water available. It is more effective if you cook the fabric in the color remover on top of the stove, but the washing machine method is so much easier that I always recommend that you try it first. Watch carefully and remove from the washer immediately if it reaches the desired color intensity, as some dyes might lighten all the way to white.

Once your trim has lightened in color, you may like the color that it ends up. If not, remove as much of the dye as possible before painting on dye or fabric paint to make it the color you want. The easiest way to recolor the trim, once you've got it nearly white, would be to use a good fabric marker such as Jacquard Tee Juice.

  2. i would use a pipet to put dye on the parts you want to lighten

i remember in class we used pipets to dye tie-dye shirts..
