How to edit video ripped from a DVD?

How can i rip a DVD so I can edit it with Adobe Premiere Elements or Windows Movie Maker or any other video editor.

I ripped it to .avi but all that shows up in my video editor is the audio track.

Use HandBrake to rip the DVD... then bring that file in for editing.
