1) you need to be on a netowrk

2)Joining a workgroup is easy, just go to 'control pannel' > 'system' > 'computer name' (tab at top) > 'change' (button at the bottom) > type in a workgroup of your choice. You can make a new on if you want or join one that already existists.

3)A domain requires a server! to join a domain you need administrive rights on the computer and server. depending on how the server is configured you can store your account on the server as a roaming profile. this way you can log onto your account on any machine connected to the domain.

XP Pro or XP Home?  The main difference between the two is that Home can't connect to a domain (so there's no domain option).
