  1. alcohol  :0)

  2. Get a roomette but they are probably too expensive. All the other ideas seem to cover it pretty well. I enjoyed reading John Madden's "Hey I Wrote a Book". He spoke a lot about his travels on the train.

  3. log on to mxit or migg33 and chat away

  4. portable DVD player and a few movies

    snacks and beverages

    blanket and pillow

  5. Train travel is very relaxed and friendly-- expect to spend a lot of time chatting with your fellow travelers. If you bring a deck of cards, you might get a card game going.  Otherwise, bring along a laptop or game system for quiet times. A favorite blanket and pillow for sleep.  A book to read.  Depending on where you're going, a camera-- some rail lines travel through some fantastic scenery that's otherwise inaccessible.

  6. A good book. A well-written science fiction or romance novel is good.

  7. sleep

  8. find the bar car

  9. Yeah, you can tell the "greyhound refugees".  They camp out in their seat the whole trip, and don't use any of the amenities they paid for.  *shrug*

Here's what everyone else does.  There's a lounge car; they spend a lot of time in it.  But they don't eat the microwaved snacks and sodas.  They save their appetite for the full-service Dining Car, which serves very good cooked-to-order food for a fair price.  They catch 2-3 meals a day.

They get a copy of the "Route Guide" that talks all about the stuff along the line.  They take an interest.  If it's a double deck train, they head to the lounge car when the best scenery is expected.

Suffice it to say, they meet a lot of people, and they move around a lot.

Don't you have to "guard your seat"?  Not on an overnight train.  Seats are all-reserved, and the car attendant *knows* you're in that seat, and he won't give it away.

Don't you have to "guard your stuff"? Have a small bag so you can take your iPod, valuables etc. with you, but nobody's gonna mess with your clothes and stuff.

Oh and remember there are giant bathrooms which make freshening up possible, so bring a change of clothes.

  10. Take your significant other and play. I rode a train from NYC to Virginia like that. The time flew.

  11. You could always read a book, or newspaper. Long trips like that are also good to catch up on work or school.

  12. I just finished a two weeker of 8,000 miles but then again, I have been accused of being a "train nut."  I enjoy the people and the scenery. I meet a wide variety of people from all parts of America.
