I need to get into the pure DOS-mode to rename mmc.exe as it's affected by virus. I don't have a floppy disk drive so what should I do?

Due to the virus I cannot start up the system.

  1. You have 3 options:

    ---------------1

Get out your Windows CD and use Recovery Console.

    Windows XP:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

    Windows 2000:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229716

mmc.exe is a very useful executable, so don't delete it entirely.

    Run System File Protection:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193

    sfc /scannow

And then run an antivirus program from Safe Mode.

You can get a trial version of TrendMicro's AV here:

    http://www.trendsecure.com/easy_install/...

...once you can get to Safe Mode, you can run it.

    -------------- 2

Another way to change a file name is to boot to a Knoppix CD and make the hard drive writeable.  Though this may be problematic if the hard drive file system is NTFS.  I haven't checked into it, but there may be a way to run antivirus from a booted Knoppix CD.  You'd have to research that.

    -------------- 3

Put the hard drive into another PC as "Hard Drive 2" and scan it from the working PC.

Make sure the working PC has fully updated Windows, and fully updated virus definitions before connecting.

    Best wishes!

  2. Ditto on the UBCD.

  3. you need to copy the rename dos command to your computer and run it there or go to file and folder view settings and select show hidden files and folders and untick hide extension for known file types and untick hide protected system files

  4. Get a friend to put DOS on a bootable CD.  You may have to enter your BIOS setup (usually like "delete" on a restart, may be F10) to reset your CDROM drive as the primary boot drive.  Hope this helps.

  5. Xp doesn't have pure DOS mode anymore. If you want to run any DOS apps install Doss-box.

  6. If you can get into safe mode enter..mrt.. into the run commands and scan for malware and als scan for spyware using windows defender at security

  7. try booting into dos mode through UBCD(Ultimate Boot CD)

just Google the keyword 'UBCD download'

    download cd and burn it.

it has inbuilt many tools such as antiviruses ,file recovery tools, etc

all that u can use in dos mode.

press F11 key while booting select boot device.

u'll be in dos mode to sort out ur problem.

  8. Run either of these to get rid of the virus, http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols...

  9. Press Start, then Run then type in: Command. This will bring you to the ancient C: command prompt.  When done type in: Exit.

  10. U can boot DOS by pressing F8 just before the windows screen appears (easiest way is to start pressing it after the BIOS has finished booting the PC and keep going)

When it picks it up you will be at the windows boot option screen.

Select command prompt from the list.
