Question:

How to establish a network connection?

I just switched to Comcast today, and yesterday I could connect to the internet on my computer with my old ISP. Today with Comcast, I cannot set up a network address. I wasn't here when the tech did the install, so I don't know if they have to have your MAC address info or not (and I dont know for sure if they do). I try to run the Comcast CD that the tech left at my apt, and the first thing the wizard does is tell me that it cannot establish a connection and suggests that my computer isn't connected to my modem (it most certainly is).

How is it that I am using the exact same equipment/settings (aside from the Comcast modem [which I know works, because my gf's laptop, which I'm on now] connects using it just fine) to connect to the internet as yesterday and yet there is no connection detected?

  1. Sometimes this happens because they may not have the modem programmed just yet. Unplug the power cable in it for about 30 seconds and try it again. Make sure you are properly cabled right. If nothing after that call them and the Tech on the phone will be able to check the modem.

Also go under run-cmd-ipconfig/release then do a ipconfig /renew.

It will force the modem to pull from a pool of DHCP addresses.

  2. It's a hiccup that happens sometimes, but there is a fix for it. The tech would have done the physical work but didn't actually check the connection.  They usually don't.

Here's what you need to do...

    Shut down the PC.

When it's off, disconnect the modem from your tower.

Start the computer up.  Let it complete the process as usual.

When it's done and ready to work, you are going to shut it down again.

When it's off completely, plug the modem back into the tower.

    Boot the PC.

    You should have a connection.

What's happening is that the PC and the modem aren't communicating.  The computer does a system check on booting, and counts all the goodies it has to work with.  It's counting, say 12, when it should have 13 - the last one being your modem.  While the plug is there and inserted properly, the PC isn't reading it.  By doing a start up without the modem, then putting it back in place, it gives the computer the "sensation" of having a new toy...so it will then acknowledge it and establish the connection.

We used to call this a "169" fix.  No idea why it had that name, it just did.

  3. You might want to go into your Network Connections in the Control Panels.  I would compare the setting from your comp to your gf's comp.  Make sure they are the same.
