  1. What your teacher wants you to do is tell him/her if the book was any good or not and why. The why is the important part.

First of all, if the teacher assigned the book, he probably thinks it's a pretty good book. Try to figure out why. It could be the story line, just the sequence of events in the book. It could be the characters. Do the characters seem realistic to you? It could be the themes. Does the author use symbols to help with the meaning of the book? For instance, do  you run into roads, railroads, rivers and the like. Often these are used as symbols for life and the decisions we all have to make. Does the author treat ideas such as racism, a possible future such as in 1984 or Brave New World, politics, environmental concerns or the like.

Choose one or two things the author does really well, or really poorly, and tell how this made the book better or worse. Do not simply retell the story. Instead, quote parts of the book to prove your point that the language was beautiful, or that the characters were well developed or whatever you're trying to prove good or bad.

In short, tell what you think of the book and give examples to prove your points.

  2. Say what you think of the text or content of the book  - the storyline, characters and the message if any the book conveys!
