  1. The game is 99% memory.. and 1% innovation.

1.Study books on opening moves and end games. Once you feel comfortable recognizing positions.. move onto books involving middle game sequences.

    2. Play games versus stronger opponents. There is a GO proverb that says "Lose your first 50 games as quickly as possible". It can be applied to any perfect-information game.

  2. Practice, play as many games as you can, read books about it, and study the grandmasters previously played games.

  3. As a beginner, you should work on two things:

    1. Your openings.

Know how to start a game. For instance, know the king pawn opening, the queen pawn opening, and others. Also know how to defend against them.

    2. Your checkmates.

Know how to check mate someone with different sets of pieces. For instance, with a rook and a rook or a king and a queen.

Also, keep in mind you will not always be the same color. Learn how to play both.

  4. Learn a couple strategies, especially the BishopQueen. Also, learn about the special moves(En Passent, and Castle). Read a couple books on it if you want(I only did to review a couple rules). Play against yourself.(Sounds hard, but your greatest opponent is yourself). Find people that are better than you and play against them and observe what they do. Also, the king pawn opening will probably be one of your best tools as a begginer, because it will allow you to perform the BishopQueen, as well as open up two pieces to move out(no other move will allow you to do that). Also, you might want to try and put other players in a "Fork and Pin"(this is where you put a piece, E.G. a queen in between two bishops[your going to get one of them if you played it right].)
