I am doing a program this weekend and I want to do a section on "going green." I have K-5 through 1st graders, and I need to tell them what it means to go green with out using any big words. Any suggestions?

  1. Going green really means living simply.  Use only what you need and reuse as many items as you can. When talking to kids, stress the importance of walking and biking instead of getting a ride from mom for short distances.  You can show them the reuse principal through crafts, or maybe you could do a can drive and have them bring in items that are recylable.

  2. Say something like...

To go green is doing things that help the earth. For example if you go out side and clean up trash, thats goiing green. And if you eat foods that were made with out chemicals then that is also going green.

Then maybe u can  do an activity with them that relates to going green like cleaning up the school yard or doing a project with recycled objects.

  3. going green is being environmentally friendly. Basically making eco-friendly choices and doing green things.

  4. type 'green for kids' into a search engine and you will probable come up with a lot of sites like this one:

    http://www.greenworks.tv/kids/index.htm

that offer concepts on how to get kids involved with 'going green'. This particular one has a link for teachers as well, so it might have some good ideas on how to communicate with the kids from your point of view there.
