How to explain the sound of music I want?

I'm beginning to work with songwriters & producers for a demo tape of mine. I really want my music to convey a more nasty, alleycat sound, if you get what I mean? I want to explain the best way of what I want so there's no confusion or upsets.

I'm really looking for a sound like..

Aerosmith's "rocks"album

Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" or "Dirrty"

Janet's "Nasty"

Britney's cover of "My Perogative" or "Me Against the Music"

Rihanna's "Disturbia"

Guns N Roses "It's so easy"

Kanye's "Stronger"

I really don't mean to make it sound like all pop, I'm just giving a few examples of songs with that kind of tone.

  1. there is a software plug-in called auto-tune 5 its electronically corrects the pitch of your voice t-pain and kayne use it. You could ask your producers to widen the ratio on their recording compressor to give you more dynamic range and boost the reverb when they mix down the track.  There are alota synthesizer effects that i bet if you play around with you'll get the sound you want. (you can email me if you want more details or explanation)

  2. Well in order to produce music with a certain sound... you must break down a song and listen to examples you like. Try and just listen for certain instruments, certain rhythms you like, dynamics, phrasing, and what kinds of keys are they written in. Are they written in major keys, or minor keys??? Also listen to the singers... how are the singing the text, what are they doing with their voice ect.

If you don't know how to answer these questions ask your songwriters to help you listen for these things.  Then when you gather up some listening research you can begin to formulate your own ideas after you know all the elements that go into the sound you want.

  3. Use Ashley Simpson's "Yeah, Yeah!" song as an example too.

Idk, Not really sure what you're question is. You seem to have nailed it in the explanation. Give this to the people you're gonna be working with and go through some trial and error. It's how music making works :)

    Best of luck.

  4. Janice Joplin? You want a pop rock with a slight edge sound. That's what it sounds like most. All of those artists are different in every way so it'll be hard to describe using them all. Try to hone your exact sound by eliminating a few. Maybe the band "Heart" is the sound you are looking for. Give them a listen.

  5. write it your self :)
