How to explain water molecules to 9 year olds?

doing science project (water surface tension) need to explain to class what are water molecules and how to adhere together when using a dropper to put water on a penny

  3. You could always start by saying:

    "Every thing is made up of little tiny particles so small... you would need a very big microscope to see them. But of all these things... water is the most fantastic. Water isnt made from wet stuff... its made from two gases... oxygen (what do we use oxygen for?)... and hydrogen (Later in the year I will show you a cool experiment with hydrogen)...."

    And then go from there.

  4. The water molecules stick together because there are 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom that it is built out of. The hydrogen and oxygen atoms attract each other like magnets, and therefore, other water molecules are attracted to the other water molecules as well, and they stick together loosely, like a weak magnet.
