How to f-ing save in tony hawk proving ground for wii.?

How do you save a game in Tony Hawk Proving Ground? I'm quite far along and I don't want to lose anything! The instruction booklet says to go to the Wii menu but there was a warning that you could lose data if you clicked on the Wii menu. So what do I do?
