Question:

How to file for a Domestic Partnership?

by  |  earlier

I live in Texas and my partner and I want to get married in California in November.

What are the steps in filing for a Domestic Partnership?

Do we have to set a date ahead of time?

I live in Dallas and he is in San Antonio for Medical School. Will that be a problem that we are not living together at this moment?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. I don't think your not living together will pose a problem. Best of luck, I hope everything goes well.

  2. Check the official government website of the state you want to file in - you may be able to download the applications there. I know that New Jersey's official website allows you to download marriage and Civil Union forms right off their website, and then you bring them into the county clerk's office when you file.

If you're talking about a Domestic Partnership in Texas ... I don't think Texas even offers that (of course, this is only according to a quick Wikipedia search).

Your best bet is probably to just call the county clerk's office and ask. You will get the most accurate information that way. Good luck!

  3. I might be wrong about this, but I think you're talking about two different things here...qualifying and filing for domestic partnership in the City of Dallas (which you can do at Dallas City Hall) has any bearing on getting married in California.  Figure out the location where you want to marry, then call that county or look on their website to find out how to file for a license.  Best wishes!
