  1. HSLDA has nothing to do with registering as a homeschooler in your state. They are a lobbyist group that pushes a fundamental Christan agenda.

For keeping a record of unschooling my good friend recommends the

    Living is Learning Curriculum Guides

As already stated, you need to comply with your state laws, but in most areas you can fit unschooling into the requirements with a little work.

Check yahoo groups for unschooling groups in your state.

  2. Do not check with your public school system unless you have decided to homeschool under their auspices.

HSLDA does have info on homeshooling, but hey also have a political agenda that has nothing to do with homeschooling, and a lot of alarmist stories on their website, designed to panic people into joining their organization.

Here is an apolitical site with information listed by state:  http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regi...

You must comply with the law, no matter what form of homeschooling you choose.

Here is info on various methods, including unschooling: http://www.homeschoollearning.com/approa...

    All the best.

  3. If you're unschooling in a state that reqquires a curriculum review or annual testing or something like that, you still have to follow the rules. I'm unschooling, in a sense, in Florida, and we're required to keep a portfolio of work samples and to submit an annual evauluation. This is easy for me to work around. I do still do things as an unschthatooler. I keep a log of all my educa ttional activity and save things in the portfolio. The state tests I have to take are no brainers for me. I usually only have to take the night before to go through the practice book and make sure I'm ready, and this past year I just sent in my SAT scores since I plan to go to college and therefore had to take the test anyway. I imagine some states are harder than others, but I know people manage to do it.

  5. The procedure to homeschool is different in every state. "Unschool" is a type of homeschooling method and means different things to different people. To find out the procedure in your area, go to the public school system's website for your district and the Board of Education website for your state.
